Being Socially Savvy is Easier Than It Sounds

Nationally known author, speaker and etiquette expert Joy Weaver knows the secret to success: being socially savvy. But stumbles always happen, and thus her presentation at the IABC August meeting — “Top 10 Faux Pas We Commit on a Daily Basis.”  

As president of Dallas-based Just Ask Joy, Weaver has counseled celebrities, business leaders and diplomats on ways to conduct themselves so that they stay in control of whatever the situation. She has advised top firms like the Adolphus Hotel, Raytheon and Sprint in their efforts to maintain five-star customer service, and shared her etiquette tips with readers of The New York Times, USA Today and Southern Living, as well as viewers of “The View,” “The Early Show” and, locally, “Good Morning Texas.”

What PR Pros Should Know About the GLBT Community

PRSA’s diversity program this year features Thomas Anable, president of Fairness Fort Worth. FFW comprises Fort Worth individuals, business leaders and organizations committed to ensuring that everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect. The city of Fort Worth instituted training on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues following the Rainbow Lounge incident. FFW promotes the training to county, educational and corporate employees.

Anable has been a senior tax manager at KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers and chief financial officer of a multi-state engineering firm. Until Dec. 31, 2010, he was managing partner of the Anable & Associates certified public accounting firm. He holds a B.B.A. in finance from UTA and an M.B.A. in quantitative financial analysis from Virginia Tech University.

The fifth annual Do the Write Thing workshop, sponsored by Tarrant County College and Whirlwind Communications, will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, on the TCC Northeast Campus in Hurst. This year’s theme, “The Dollars and Sense of Publishing,” will explore how to get work published without breaking the bank. Topics for the seven sessions include overcoming writer’s block, creating an e-book/Kindle, and marketing for writers. Ann Weisgarber, author of the award-winning “The Personal History of Rachel Dupree,” is guest artist. Cost is $50 in advance, $25 students with ID, $75 at the door. Richard Pollak, a co-founder and former editor of [MORE] and now a contributing editor of The Nation, will speak on travel and leisure writing at the Writers’ Guild of Texas meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug.15, at the Richardson Public Library.
