Shining the Spotlight on Local Nonprofits

The world of nonprofit organizations — raising funds, boosting awareness, recruiting volunteers — will unfold at the December meeting as seven service organizations make short presentations.  

Representatives from Relay For Life of Fort Worth, Samaritan House, The Ladder Alliance, MHMR Visions, YWCA, the American Red Cross Chisholm Trail Chapter and Mapping Your Future and will explain how PRSA members, individually and as a group, can help these organizations reach their goals. One representative will be seated at each table.

Time & date: 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8
Place: Joe T. Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant, 2201 N. Commerce St.
Cost: $25 members, $30 nonmembers, students $20, walk-ups add $5

Deadline is Jan. 10 to apply for a Phillip D. Reed Memorial Award for Outstanding Writing on the Southern Environment, sponsored by the Southern Environmental Law Center. The award seeks to enhance public awareness of the value and vulnerability of the region’s natural heritage by recognizing writers who effectively tell stories about the South’s environment. The award has two categories: book and journalism, the latter for newspaper and magazine writing and for online writing published by a recognized institution such as a newspaper, university or nonprofit organization. Prizes of $1,000 are awarded in each category. Submissions must have been published in 2010. More at southernenvironment.org.

IABC local update: Each December the IABC Dallas board invites to the luncheon a group of guests from local nonprofit agencies. This year, in lieu of a speaker, the guests will come with a communications challenge or project to discuss at each table. The Season of Giving luncheon will be Dec. 14 at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Plano.
