Bronze Quill 2010: An Out-of-this-world Celebration of Excellence

In addition to being an out-of-this-world celebration of the best work of North Texas’ best communicators, IABC Fort Worth’s signature awards show — sponsored this year by Studios 121 — also features a firsthand, out-of-this-world look at the inner world of the nation’s space program.

Josh Byerly, NASA public affairs officer and the internationally recognized voice of Mission Control, will give his unique glimpse of NASA, including the final flights of the space shuttle, the future of the International Space Station and the president’s plans for the space program. Byerly also will reveal how NASA leverages its brand, with an emphasis on harnessing the power of social media.

A former television journalist, Byerly has served as head of global communications for Flowserve Corp., a $4 billion manufacturing company in Dallas, and as a senior executive at two leading PR agencies in North Texas. His clients have included Centex Homes, Texas Instruments and Sprint.

Building a Corporate Social Responsibility Program

You can’t turn on the TV these days without seeing corporate social responsibility (CSR) in action. From Tom’s Shoes to Pepsi Refresh to the American Express Members Project, companies worldwide are latching on to the idea. It’s enough to make you want to implement a little CSR at your own organization. Laura Moore, global communications VP at Kimberly-Clark Corp., will provide guidance at the next PRSA meeting on how to build community relations programs that make an impact.

Moore manages executive, strategic and employee communications, media relations and crisis communications at Kimberly-Clark. She also is responsible for the Kimberly-Clark Foundation, which responds to need with financial contributions, product donations and volunteer time. Last year, K-C and its employees donated $21.6 million in cash and product for charitable causes worldwide.

Among her credits, Moore has PR senior vice president experience at Regions Financial Corp. and RadioShack Corp., and she was public affairs officer for the Texas Department of Transportation. She has received the National Headliner Award from the Association for Women in Communications and the Texas Public Relations Association’s Outstanding Practitioner Award.

Time & date: 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, June 9
Place: Colonial Country Club, 3735 Country Club Circle
