What to Do When the News Goes Foul

A few weeks ago TV cameras recorded a Rangers fan in the stands catching a ball, but notice the bawling toddler a few seats away who was upset because he wanted the souvenir, too. Within seconds the video went viral, and the life of the North Texas resident who caught the ball got really messed up.

IABC Fort Worth on June 19 will host the man in the lens, Sean Leonard, who will offer insights into how a split-second reaction can become a social media blowup that dogs a private citizen.

Pilar Schank, a communications pro who assisted Leonard with media relations over the incident, will join him in a panel discussion, as will former area TV reporter Jeff Crilley, who will explain how TV news works in a crisis and how to prepare for that unwanted moment on the stage.

Attendees also will have the opportunity to tape a mock interview and receive feedback from the panelists.

Time & date: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, June  19 (a week earlier than usual), lunch included
Place: Studios 121, 6125 Airport Freeway, Haltom City
Cost: members of any IABC chapter with a reservation $25, nonmembers with reservation $30, students with reservation $20; online add $1, walk-ins without a reservation add $5

From the Everyday to the Bad Day:
Taking Communications to the Next Level

Just one unexpected e-mail or phone call can make it a bad day. How an organization manages everyday public relations forms the foundation to its crisis communications response.

Former Greater Fort Worth chapter president (2002) Kristie Aylett, APR, has been on the front lines after a variety of “bad days,” including a mass casualty incident and natural disasters. At the June meting she’ll share how to develop a strategic approach to telling the stories of an organization when disaster strikes.

A long-time member of PRSA, Aylett in 2004 relocated her consulting firm, the KARD Group PR/Marketing, to the Mississippi Gulf Coast region, where she become active in the Public Relations Association of Mississippi and the Southern Public Relations Federation; she is a PRAM past president and the current SPRF membership vice president. In 2009 both organizations recognized her with their highest individual honors, the Professional Achievement Award.

Aylett was elected a national assembly delegate at large in 2007 and served as Southwest District chair in 2010. A member of the New Orleans chapter, she currently serves on the executive committee for PRSA’s Independent Practitioner Alliance section.

Time & date: 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, June 13
Place: Colonial Country Club, 3735 Country Club Circle, Fort Worth
Cost: chapter members $25, national members $30, nonmembers $35, students $20; walk-ups add $5
